Carla Bozulich's mighty Evangelista return with what might well be a career-best album, inspired by "the forces of rocks, evolution, geology, drugs, boxing, everything-ology and dead stuff that makes the dirt and cement and the trees grow." Refusing to rock out as we all know they can, on In Animal Tongue Evangelista's brute force is more a threat or an implication than a demonstrable reality, but you feel it crushing you all the same - we can't remember the last time we heard an album this tense, this fraught, this dramatic. It's also disarmingly beautiful, Bozulich's vocals hitting new heights of pained expressionism, like Joanna Newsom at the tail-end of a weeklong barbs-bender with Diamanda Galas, her elegantly reverbed guitar framed by carefully picked-out chamber instrumentation, provided by a number of notable guests including San Mickens, Shahzad Ismaily, John Eichenseer, Francesco Guerri, Sophie Trudeau and Thierry Amar. The almost gothic title track is just incredible, cracked harmonies offering a warning, or perhaps a curse, across a dustbowl backdrop of woodwind, earthy percussion and levitating string drones; other numbers range from the severely minimalist to the quasi-symphonic, variously recalling the Bad Seeds, A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Tindersticks' extraordinary film scores for Claire Denis. This is simply one of the lushest, most compelling and stunningly well-produced visions of dark Americana we've encountered in recent years.
