THE BOX
2019 begins on a very high note with the debut album from Birmingham's Horse Feathers. They have been together for about 20 years and finally got around to recording and releasing a classic. Sometimes you hear music that just hits you straight in the heart and you know that you have been dealt a good hand. This is such an album, the music is reminiscent of Tom Russell, Savanah and the Jaguars. The Pogues, Ennio Morricone, Spaghetti Westerns and a whole lot more. There are touches of dialogue here and there throughout the album which reminds me of the soundtrack to Natural Born Killlers at times and in a very positive way. We're talking cowboys, song stories, wide open landscapes, violence, death and more. This is Alt Country for the modern day and I wouldn't have been surprised if this band came from New Mexico. This is beyond copying a style, this is taking music to a new direction which remaining rooted to where it comes from.
A special note to the sleeve. Clearly a lot of work has gone into the project, the single sleeve is textured as is the beautiful 4 page lyric inner. The album also includes some playing cards, a couple of band stickers and a download code. I can't recommend this album enough, it is a run of 300 copies - grab one while you can as I'm sure that it will sell out soon.
