- HOW ABOUT NOW
ONE OF MY ALBUMS OF THE YEAR FOR 2014. SONGS THAT DWIGHT YOAKAM WOULD GIVE HIS RIGHT ARM FOR. CHECK OUT THESE LINKS. AS FAR AS I KNOW, THIS IS A LIMITED VINYL RELEASE SO GRAB ONE WHILE YOU CAN.
Borrowed this from Truck Store - I couldn't put it better myself.
Ags Connolly's debut album is one of the most timelessly perfect releases to emerge from Oxfordshire's surprisingly furtile Americana scene. Ags is very much an old fashioned troubadour at heart, his earthy country sound tapping into a pure lineage of outlaw country musicians like Waylon Jennings or Johnny Paycheck and purpously rejects the high-gloss country-pop sound of contemporary Nashville. Ags makes no attempt to shy away from the debt his sound owes to these forebearers, the album cover sees Ags sat in a bar adorned with the patron saints of real country Willie, Waylon, Hank Snow etc while opening track 'When Country Was Proud' pre-empts any criticism that this young man from rural Oxfordshire should come out with such a traditionally American sound with the stunning couplet "You're too young to remember them/ That's what you were going to say/ I just love how they said the hard stuff/ In a pure and easy way". Ags is a man with a deeply entrenched knowledge and love for country music and there's nothing more authentic than that.
Having plyed his wares around Oxfordshire as a solo act; armed with a poignant, deep voice and a clutch of direct and immediately compelling songs, it's a real pleasure to hear Ags backed up here by a crack team of session pro's. Augmented beautifully by pedal steel, fiddle and occasional backing vocals, Ags' songs have been brought to life with great skill by fellow Drumfire Records artist Dean Owens and were largely recorded live in the studio lending further authenticity to this big-hearted and honest album. Highly recommended and not just because we're biased!
